Alabama Residents Clash on Social Media over Gambling
As Alabama lawmakers prepare to reconvene for the new legislative session next week, gambling is expected to be one of the hot topics on the table.
LISTEN TO THIS ARTICLE:Ahead of the meeting, the state’s online community has become heated, with pro-gambling and anti-gambling advocates strongly sharing their perspectives and persuading others to join their cause.
According to local reports, this week, the Petroleum & Convenience Marketers of Alabama started a social media ad campaign supporting a legalized market. The group is urging lawmakers to back a bill that lets citizens vote on whether to establish a state lottery.
A social media movement called Give Alabama a Voice, is also calling on Alabamians to speak out and demand an opportunity to vote on an Alabama Lottery.
In a statement on its page, the movement asserted that Alabama is closer than ever to establishing a state lottery. It emphasized that a state-run lottery would not only give residents the chance to win billions but also retain revenue currently lost to neighboring states.
Additionally, the group stated that revenue from the lottery would be allocated towards funding schools and additional infrastructure like roads without increasing taxes.
In one of its ads, the Sports Betting Alliance cited consumer protection from “predatory, offshore betting sites” and significant tax revenue gains as justification for legalizing sports betting in Alabama. The group estimated that a legal online sports wagering market would generate an annual windfall of $65 million to $90 million for the state.

The Case Against Gambling in Alabama
Opposition voices are also making themselves heard online as they caution against the potential consequences of expanded gambling in Alabama.
The Alabama Policy Institute (API) is at the forefront of the opposition. Per local reports, the API just launched a new website for this purpose.
In a statement, the group referred to the expansion of gaming in Alabama as a “bad public policy” that would have negative fiscal and social consequences. It argued that legalizing casino-style gambling and a statewide lottery would not provide a sustainable solution to Alabama's financial challenges. Instead, these activities would funnel money into government coffers, regardless of the outcome for individual players.
The API continued that relying on gambling revenue will create a toxic cycle where politicians encourage reckless spending to feed the state's addiction. This regressive funding model will hurt the most vulnerable and inevitably lead to calls for even more gaming expansion.
Gambling Bills Stall in Alabama Legislature
Despite the increasing clamor for expanded gambling options, Alabama remains one of the few states in the US without a lottery, sports betting, or online gambling. Several bills introduced in the Alabama legislature for this purpose have consistently stalled.
In February 2024, a legislative committee in Alabama approved a bill that proposes the legalization of a lottery, as well as sports betting and casinos across the state. While hopes were initially raised, they were dashed when the proposal was scaled down in the Senate and eventually failed to pass.
