Since launching in 2018, GAMSTOP has seen more than 560,000 people sign up for its gambling self-exclusion service, which enables users to voluntarily block themselves from accessing online gambling platforms.

GAMSTOP noted that sign-ups have continually outpaced initial projections, which it says proves there is a “critical need for effective self-exclusion mechanisms.”

In 2024, independent research by Ipsos found GAMSTOP to be highly effective, with 75% of users saying they no longer participated in online gambling. Meanwhile, 78% of those surveyed stated the service had met their expectations.

With the UK preparing to make changes to how it funds research, education, and treatment for gambling harm, GAMSTOP believes its data and insights will prove valuable to those tasked with designing and implementing solutions.

Leadership Reflects on Progress

Jenny Watson, who is stepping down as chair of GAMSTOP Group, has spoken in praise of the organization’s achievements over the past seven years. She described GAMSTOP as a vital component of the UK’s online casino industry, offering critical support to vulnerable users.

Watson also pointed out the surprising statistic that more than 1% of the UK adult population has chosen to self-exclude and current trends suggest that sign-ups are unlikely to slow down.

Our success is measured not only by the numbers but by the stories of transformation and recovery. Over the years we have heard from many consumers who credit GAMSTOP with helping them regain control over their lives. These personal accounts are a powerful reminder of the importance of our work and the profound impact it has on individuals and their families.

A Focus on Continuous Support

CEO Fiona Palmer also expressed support for the upcoming changes in how RET (research, education, and treatment) initiatives are funded.

GAMSTOP now operates two main self-exclusion services. Its flagship offering, GAMSTOP, is tailored to online gambling, blocking access to licensed operators. Meanwhile, MOSES helps individuals exclude themselves from physical betting shops.

GAMSTOP also powers GamProtect, a technology platform that offers a single customer view to gambling operators to help improve consumer protection. Earlier in the year, GAMSTOP introduced an auto-renewal feature in response to widespread user feedback, which allows people to maintain their self-exclusion without needing to reapply.
