Ontario Online Gambling Handle Sees Q2 Growth
iGaming Ontario has published its second-quarter results, revealing a substantial growth in sports betting handle and online casino revenue.
Average Ontario player spend across all gambling categories was CA$308 in Q2.
In Q2, Ontario's gamblers placed CA$18.7 billion in wagers, up by 1.6% from the first quarter, when the handle was CA$18.4 billion. The total also surged 31.7% from the same period last year.
Significantly, Q2's handle marks the largest quarterly bet total since digital sports betting and online gaming began in April 2022.
The handle figures exclude promotional deductions, as iGaming Ontario's quarterly reports do not come with information on promotional deductions, hold, and operator-specific data.
However, according to the report, 53 operators and 83 platforms were active in the province's market during the second quarter.
In Ontario online casinos, total bets reached CA$16 billion, an increase of 1.7% from Q1's total. Gaming revenue surged 35.4% year-over-year to CA$738 million.
Casino gaming accounted for 86% of the total bets and 75% of total revenue. This segment features results from slots, live/table games, and peer-to-peer bingo.
Sports Betting Sector Declines
Regarding sports betting, handle totaled CA$2.2 billion, while revenue amounted to CA$167 million. The figures represent a decline from the first quarter.
Peer-to-peer betting accounted for CA$417 million in handle and CA$18 million in gaming revenue.
According to iGaming Ontario, the average player spend across categories was CA$308. Also, Active player accounts totaled 1.32 million in the second quarter.

iGaming Market to Expand Internationally
In August, Ontario’s government initiated a legal inquiry to determine if the province's regulated online gaming sites can legally extend their services to allow in-province gamblers to engage with players beyond Canada's borders.
This strategic move is poised to transform Ontario's iGaming landscape, elevating player engagement and revenue potential. The case is slated for deliberation in a Toronto courtroom this autumn.
