Punter Sues bet365 After Placing 162 Bets on Christmas Eve
A gambler is suing bet365 after he lost hundreds of thousands of pounds in a gambling spree that saw him place 162 bets in a single night.
The man placed the 162 bets on Christmas Eve, and despite his rapidly accumulating losses, bet365 has rejected claims that the punter was a compulsive gambler. According to the bettor, Vayuputra Anirudh Thotapalli, he lost £300,000 gambling at the site between February 3, 2015, and March 10, 2016.
Thotapalli claims that in addition to placing 162 bets on Christmas Eve, he also placed more than 30 bets a day for 33 days. He said that it took bet365 two months to ask him for documents showing his source of income and that he managed to open an account and lose £46,907 before the documents were requested in April 2015.
A High Court trial is expected to begin soon, and it may well attract attention from other gamblers who have lost substantial amounts. The involved parties are due to exchange witness statements by September 15, 2023.
bet365 has rejected Thotapalli’s accusations and said that it “repeatedly engaged” with him to ensure he did not suffer from a gambling addiction. The operator claims it sent him a self-assessment query a few weeks after he opened his account that included questions such as, “Do you gamble until your last penny is gone, even the fare home or the cost of a cup of tea?”
Furthermore, bet365 says that they approached him over the telephone to ensure that his answers were correct, and they claim that “At no time did the claimant informs bet365 that he was a compulsive gambler. Instead, he positively confirmed to bet365 that he was in control of his gambling and passed the RGSA on at least four occasions.”
