RGC Debuts Public Awareness Campaign in Ontario with thinktv
The Responsible Gambling Council has launched a public awareness campaign in Ontario to sensitize people about the risks of online gambling.
The campaign was undertaken in collaboration with thinktv, a marketing and research association. The latter will work with the RGC to televise and air the initiative in the coming weeks.
Ontario’s iGaming and sports betting market went live on April 4, and since then, the province has seen an influx of online casinos, sportsbooks, and gambling-related advertising. In August 2022, iGaming Ontario, a subsidiary of AGCO, published the first quarter report of the province’s market operations, revealing over 400,000 active player accounts and an average monthly spend of $113 per player.
With the rise of online gambling and sports betting advertising in Ontario – and across Canada – we recognised there was a need to help the public understand the sensationalised ads we’re seeing on TV don’t necessarily reflect reality. It is important for everyone to learn and understand the risks involved when gambling in the online space and how to minimise those risks when playing online.
The initiative will target new and recreational users and lead them to the website KnowTheRisks.ca for more information about gambling risks and responsible gambling behavior.
With its member networks, thinktv will ensure that the public service announcement will hit the Canadian broadcast networks in Ontario, with the potential of being aired across the entire Canadian broadcast community.
We are delighted to work with RGC to support ongoing player protection initiatives with our member broadcast networks. There is an opportunity for us all to work together to ensure Ontarians receive a balanced message when it comes to online gambling and sports betting.
This would not be the first safer gambling campaign in Ontario. In May 2022, TheScore Bet launched Bet Mode Responsibly, a responsible gambling campaign in the Canadian province.
