Swedish Self-Exclusion Service Records 100K Signups
LISTEN TO THIS ARTICLE:Swedish gambling centralized self-exclusion system Spelpaus has recorded 100,000 registrations of users at risk of experiencing gambling harm.
Launched on January 1, 2019, Spelpaus serves as the primary player protection service for Sweden’s regulated online gambling industry.
According to regulations, every licensed Swedish online gambling provider is mandated to integrate their databases with the Spelpaus register to ensure that self-excluded individuals are unable to access their websites and are not subject to marketing efforts. These include casinos, bingo, lotteries, racetracks, and Casino Cosmopol. Once implemented, the suspension cannot be reversed or prematurely terminated, adhering to the industry standard for self-exclusion lists.
Spelinspektionen, Sweden’s Gambling Inspectorate, is in charge of the self-exclusion system and has carried out several efforts to improve and promote the service to players in its jurisdiction.
Enhancing Consumer Protection in Swedish Gambling
Last year, the Swedish government awarded the regulator funds to enhance Spelpaus and relaunch it as part of its efforts to improve consumer protection and safety measures within the Swedish gambling industry.
Spelpaus 2.0 was launched at the end of 2022 with a new website design, enhanced ID verification services, and more advanced features players can use to self-exclude from gaming. The platform also offers updated and clear instructions for self-exclusion as well as family referrals.
In 2022, the service gained 80,000 members, prompting the government to evaluate its effectiveness earlier this year.
In 2023, the Inspectorate also initiated a nationwide campaign to promote the Spelpaus self-exclusion program throughout Sweden's regions. Last month, the government announced that it will increase the Inspectorate’s budget with an additional SEK 20m (approximately €1.8m) to further assist the regulator from 2024 to 2026.
Spelinspektionen has stated that it will use the additional funding to upgrade its sports betting integrity monitoring systems to align with the standards set by the Macolin Convention of the Council of Europe.
The gambling regulator has also set aside an additional budget to create innovative monitoring solutions and protections against illegal operators targeting Swedish players.
