Four people from Illinois are being charged after allegedly running a baccarat scheme that saw them scam $300,000 from Wind Creek Bethlehem. The scam required six people to run and took place earlier this month.

Court documents show that Zu Lin, Yuhan Hu, Liping Zhou, and Zhencan Chen were detained by authorities while the two other members of the group, Fuxiang Liu and Qingyong Zhang, allegedly a ringleader, left the venue.

An Early Morning Scam

According to police reports, the scam began around 4 am with the six people meeting at a reserved baccarat table on the casino floor. Qingyong Zhang, the alleged leader, used techniques to exploit casino weaknesses, including using a hidden cellphone to record card sequences and careful card positioning in order to track the deck as it was shuffled.

Zhang and Hu then left the gaming area and met at Hu’s hotel room before returning shortly afterward to continue playing. Police believe that at roughly 5:10 am Zhang instructed the others to increase their bets, which led to a number of big wins over the next half hour.

After their successful run, the group split up with Zhang and Liu leaving the casino and the other four moving on to different games. Hu reportedly told police that Zhang paid him $5,000 for his part in the scam and that all the proceeds from the operation when to Zhang.

Group Facing Felony Charges

Police discovered that Hu and Zhou had taken part in other illegal gambling activities in Illinois and Missouri, respectively. The four who were detained by police are facing felony charges for being part of a corrupt organization. Lin, Hu and Chen posted bail of $100,000 while Zhou is in custody at Northampton County Prison.

All of the accused, who range in age from 28 to 51, come from Chicago, with the exception of Lin, who is from Mount Vernon, Illinois. So far, there has been no comment from the defendants’ legal representatives. While there is a warrant for Liu’s arrest on fraud-related charges, he is yet to be found.
