Call for More Funding Amid Glasgow Gambling Concerns
A recent survey has revealed worrying statistics about gambling in Glasgow, Scotland, which has prompted local leaders to call for more funding from the UK Government to address the growing issue.

The findings, which are being presented to the Wellbeing, Equalities, Communities, Culture and Engagement Committee (WECCE), show that among 4,518 adults surveyed, 10% reported spending money on gambling, excluding the National Lottery, in the past month.
Gambling On the Rise Across Several Demographics
The survey, conducted by NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde (NHSGGC), reported on findings from the 2024 Adult Health and Wellbeing survey. It found increased gambling rates, particularly among those aged 25–34 and 55–64, individuals living in poverty, and men.
Participants who had gambled recently were asked how often they returned to try to recover losses. While 75% said they never did, 18% said they did so occasionally, 5% admitted to doing it most of the time, and 1% confessed to doing it every time. The data suggests that approximately 3,000 adults in Glasgow frequently attempt to win back lost money.
Meanwhile, the Glasgow Education Services Health and Wellbeing Census 2021–22 revealed that 25% of students in S3, S5, and S6 had spent money on gambling in the previous month. Their activities ranged from private betting and fruit machines to lottery participation, online gaming, betting shops, and bingo.

Gambling harms are the adverse impacts from gambling on the health and well-being of individuals, families, communities, and society. In Scotland, it is estimated that more than 200,000 people are at risk of, or currently experiencing, harm related to their own gambling.
Committee members are being asked to continue collaborating with the Scottish Government and national organizations to combat gambling harm. They are also being asked to advocate for a review of the Gambling Act and push the UK Government to provide Glasgow with a fair share of funding to address the issue effectively.
