Colombian Goalkeeping Legend Higuita Joins Betsson Team
Betsson Group has announced the appointment of former Colombian keeper René Higuita as its latest brand ambassador.
Higuita joins a list of former South American football stars serving as Betsson ambassadors in the region.
The alliance comes as the gambling operator seeks to expand its footprint in the Latin American market. It is also a strategic extension of the group’s existing partnerships in the region, which include sponsorship deals with three esteemed teams: Boca Juniors and Racing Club in Argentina, and Atlético Nacional in Colombia.
In Betsson's Q1 report posted in April, it shared a 3.3% year-on-year decrease in its LatAm revenue to €44 million. The operator attributed the decline to a lower sportsbook margin, reduced sportsbook activity, and unfavorable fluctuations in currency exchange rates.
By bringing Higuita on board, Betsson aims to boost its brand visibility, attract new customers, and increase engagement with existing ones, particularly football fans in the region.
We are proud to collaborate with a football legend like René Higuita, who embodies our passion for football and entertainment. This partnership reinforces our commitment to the Colombian market and strengthens our leading position in Latin America.

Higuita’s Football Legacy
Higuita had an illustrious sports career marked by his professionalism and showmanship. He played a crucial role in Colombia’s return to the World Cup in the 1990s, ending a 28-year drought. During his time with Atlético Nacional, he won two Colombian league championships (1991, 1994), a Copa Libertadores title (1989), and two Inter-American Cup victories (1990, 1997).
Higuita is famously recognized for his extraordinary display in the 1995 Copa Libertadores, which has been lauded as the “most spectacular keeper performance in the competition’s history’ by Unusual Copa Libertadores Stories. Higuita’s most highlighted move during this tournament was a daring scorpion kick save against England.
Higuita adds to the growing list of former South American football stars serving as Betsson ambassadors in the region, including Iván Zamorano, Paolo Guerrero, Mario Yepes, Zé Roberto, and Nolberto Solano.
This alliance began as a bold idea and has now become a reality. I’m proud to join Betsson to make a difference and bring the passion of football closer to the fans.
