Crown Sydney Casino Opens After Months of Delays

After numerous delays, Crown Resorts has finally officially opened the casino at its AU$2.2 billion Crown Sydney development. The casino opening came more than 18 months after it launched non-gaming operations at the venue.

The company has said that the Crown Barangaroo’s VIP gaming facility will be fully operational by October 2022 when the Mahogany Floor is due to open. However, for now, visitors can enjoy the main gaming floor, the Crystal Room.

The Crystal Room houses 160 table together with 66 electronic tables while the Mahogany Floor is home to 30 private saloons. The VIP-only facility, which has a minimum bet of AU$20, which not have any poker machines.

Anyone who signs up to the Crown Rewards program can enjoy free membership. At present, existing Black and Platinum Crown Rewards members and their guests can access the Crystal Room and Gold Crown Rewards members will be allowed in at a later date.

Gaming operations at Crown Barangaroo were delayed due to independent inquiries in New South Wales, Victoria and Western Australia into the operator that found Crown was unfit to hold a casino license. The inquiries were launched due to reports of Crown’s relationship with high-roller junket operators who were linked to Asian criminal gangs. There were also failings in the company’s treatment of problem gamblers.

We expect to be fully open in October as we build the membership base. The level of interest has exceeded our expectations in terms of membership. I think we’ll be at a pretty good pace relatively quickly. However, what’s important to us is that we do that in a very safe and responsible way.
