Delaware’s Sports Betting Revenue Skyrockets in December
The Delaware Lottery has enjoyed an increase in sports betting revenue for December, together with a larger handle, while revenue from iGaming was steady despite a drop in spending. Revenue for sports betting in December 2023 reached $2.1 million, a 50% increase from the previous year and a substantial 264.1% rise from November 2023’s $576,800.
Sports Betting Continues to Grow
Betting activity in Delaware also grew, with players spending $5.8 million on sports betting during the month. This figure not only surpasses December 2022’s total by 7.3% but also outstrips November’s $8.1 million by 8.6%.
Leading the sports wagering market was Delaware Park, generating $302,801 in revenue from a $2.1 million handle. Following closely were Bally’s Dover, with $161,432 from $1.1 million, and Harrington Raceway, earning $65,701 from $448,031.
December also marked the debut of Delaware’s first online sportsbook. Operated by Rush Street Interactive (RSI) and BetRivers, the sportsbook initiated a soft launch on December 27 and became fully operational a week later. Additionally, $1.5 million in revenue stemmed from $5.2 million in wagers placed with retailers during the month.
Casino Revenue Steady but Spending Down
Alongside the new sportsbook, Delaware introduced three updated versions of the existing live online casinos in the state, operated by Delaware Park, Bally’s Dover Casino, and Harrington Raceway & Casino. The update may provide a much-needed boost to the casino sector, which reported steady revenue despite reduced player spending in December.
Online casino revenue for December stood at $1.2 million, consistent with December 2022 and up 9.1% from November 2023’s $1.1 million. The revenue breakdown includes $968,264 from video lottery, $174,138 from table games, and $24,191 from poker rake and fees.
However, player spending on iGaming was down. The total amount wagered was $31.3 million, 29.4% less than the $44.3 million spent in December 2022 and slightly below November’s $32.1 million. The breakdown of spending was $18.2 million in video lottery games and $13.1 million in table games, with total winnings for the month amounting to $30.2 million.
Delaware Park took the lead, generating $448,699 from a $17.6 million handle. Bally’s Dover followed with $433,402 from $7.9 million, and Harrington contributed $284,490 off $5.9 million.
