Denmark’s Gambling Authority Tackles Underage Gambling after Spillemyndigheden Report
Denmark's gambling authority, Spillemyndigheden, has recently released data highlighting an alarming trend among Danish gamblers. According to the data from its StopSpillet helpline, half of the problem gamblers reaching out for assistance admitted to having started gambling before they reached the legal age of 18.
Launched in 2019, StopSpillet has received nearly 2,500 inquiries via phone and chat, helping a significant number of problem gamblers get the necessary assistance. The helpline is dedicated to providing advice and support to problem gamblers, their relatives, or professionals trying to mitigate the harm caused by gambling addiction.
Throughout 2022, Spillemyndigheden actively promoted its StopSpillet helpline, featuring advertising campaigns on TV, social media, and in public spaces such as bus stops and train stations. The regulator also capitalized on major sporting events like the FIFA World Cup and the Tour de France to increase awareness of its services.
The data provided by Spillemyndigheden reveals some worrying statistics. A staggering 88% of problem gamblers who sought help through StopSpillet had placed their first bet before they turned 25. Even more, disconcerting is that 50% of these gamblers started betting before they were legally allowed to, casting doubt on the integrity of the gambling regulation and gaming market in Denmark.
The gambling regulator also disclosed data about individuals who sought help on behalf of someone else. Parents of problem gamblers made up half of these inquiries, while 17% were from partners of gambling addicts. Nine percent of the calls came from siblings, 7% from friends, and 17% from the problem gambler’s children or other relatives or acquaintances.
In response to this concerning trend, a newly formed Danish Gambling Committee has initiated an investigation into problem gambling, aiming to enhance market safety for high-risk customers.
