Devon High Sheriff Caroline Harlow Tackles Responsible Gambling
Caroline Harlow the newly appointed High Sheriff of Devon in the United Kingdom (UK) has announced she intends to use her role to highlight the issue of problem gambling in the region.

Harlow, aged 70, had a career in the NHS and private sector as a specialist treating people with brain injuries. She has also served on the board of homelessness charities and a prison trust and has a comprehensive knowledge of the problems that can face these groups.
The role of High Sheriff of Devon has existed for hundreds of years and is now seen as more of a ceremonial position, but Harlow can play an important part in raising awareness of issues like reducing harm to those vulnerable to gambling risks. In her new position, Harlow will be liaising with many key stakeholders in the regulation of the gambling framework in the county, including the judiciary, law enforcement, and responsible gambling organizations.

Harlow Wants to Share Her Firsthand Experience of Addiction
Harlow has indicated that during her year in office, she wants to focus on gambling addiction, and to raise awareness for the more vulnerable in society including the homeless and prison population. During her time as a volunteer at homeless centers, Harlow says she has gained an in-depth knowledge of addiction issues and she is keen to share these thoughts will regulatory stakeholders in the sector. She says that some of these individuals are vulnerable to gambling-related harms.
Additionally, during her tenure Harlow wants to create a program that leads to early intervention of individuals at risk from gambling-related harms and can direct them to the appropriate support services.
I’m deeply honoured and excited by the potential of my role, Gambling addiction is often hidden but has a devastating impact, leading people into financial ruin, crime, and ultimately, prison. My goal is to get people talking about this issue and to support initiatives that help individuals recover and reintegrate into society.
