MGM Resorts, a renowned casino and hotel conglomerate, recently fell victim to a cyber-attack, leading to widespread disruptions in its operations.

Customers have reported a range of issues, from malfunctioning slot machines to difficulties with online room bookings.

The company confirmed that certain systems had to be shut down due to this "cyber-security issue." However, they were quick to reassure patrons that their facilities remained "operational."

Cyber-Attack Disrupts MGM Grand

An incident at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas highlighted the extent of the disruption. A guest recounted her experience of inadvertently entering the wrong room due to the hotel's digital keys malfunctioning. In response to the inconvenience, the hotel staff distributed physical keys and offered her a complimentary stay. This guest further shared a video on TikTok, showcasing the slot machines and gambling games at the resort being out of service.

The ripple effects of the cyber-attack were evident on social media. Numerous customers voiced their frustrations about canceled reservations, inability to check in, challenges with card payments, and issues accessing their MGM accounts. One particularly distressed customer mentioned that he had to vacate the MGM Grand to procure cash for food.

MGM Resorts, in a statement released on X (previously known as Twitter), announced the initiation of a thorough investigation with the aid of top-tier external cybersecurity professionals. "We also notified law enforcement and took prompt action to protect our systems and data, including shutting down certain systems," the statement elaborated. While the investigation is still underway, the exact "nature and scope" of the cyber-attack remains undetermined.

In a follow-up statement, the company emphasized that core services, including dining, entertainment, and gaming, remain functional. "Our guests continue to be able to access their hotel rooms, and our Front Desk is ready to assist our guests as needed," they added.

Similar Attacks in the Past

The company's primary website is currently inaccessible. Visitors are greeted with a message stating the site's unavailability and are directed to reach out to the company via phone or third-party websites. This message is consistently displayed across the websites of the firm's various resorts. This attack happened a mere month after the company announced that BetMGM has been launched in the UK.

This isn't the first time MGM Resorts has encountered such a cyber-security predicament. In 2019, the company faced a significant breach when one of its cloud services was compromised. This breach resulted in the theft of over 10 million customer records, including names, addresses, and passport numbers. The lingering question now is whether the recent cyber-attack has led to a similar data breach.
