Dutch Regulators Urged to Protect Minors from Illegal Gambling
Two trade organizations, VNLOK and NOGA, representing legal gambling companies in the Netherlands have raised concerns that many illegal gambling websites in the region can be accessed by minors and are urging the Dutch Gaming Authority (DGA) to take action to address this issue.

LISTEN TO THIS ARTICLE:This move follows a recent study by the Quality Mark for Responsible Affiliations (KVA), which found that minors could access illegal gaming websites in the country. During the research, young people could create accounts with illegal online gambling operations in the Netherlands, without any identification. It was then possible for young people to open and fund the gaming accounts with cryptocurrency funds, and then place wagers on the illegal websites.
These actions are illegal in the Netherlands under the legislative framework on gambling in the jurisdiction. The trade bodies VNLOK and NOGA are calling for the Dutch Gaming regulators to enforce the legal guidelines in the country, including trying to penalize auxiliary organizations like internet providers, advertising platforms, and payment processors.

Regulator Believes Removing Illegal Sites is the Key
The regulator states that it is already giving penalty notices to these online operators that it has identified as failing to carry out age identification checks, or other breaches of legislation in the region, including KSA issues fine for illegal gambling.
The DGA was quick to point out that following the Gambling Act, some changes in the legislative framework had seen the organization lose some of its enforcement powers. It believes this is an issue that could be looked into when a review of the Remote Gambling Act is conducted later this year.
The Dutch regulator expresses that the most effective way to deal with illegal online gaming operations and protect children from underage gambling is to remove the offending websites.
This authority was lost in the legislative process when the Remote Gambling Act was introduced, but it is an important point for discussion in evaluating that legislation this year.
