GambleAware Awards Grant for Women Problem Gambling Research
GambleAware has awarded a £250,000 research grant to a team looking to collect evidence of the lived experiences of women in relation to gambling and gambling-related harm.
The team is led by Kelsey Beninger, director at IFF Research, together with Maria Fannin, a profession of human geography at the University of Bristol. Also on the team are Sharon Collard, professor of personal finance at the University of Bristol, and Dominique Webb, head of programs at GamCare, and Marina Smith, women’s program manager at GamCare.
The research will utilize a mixed-methods, multidisciplinary and multi-sector approach and it is set to run for 18 months. It will include roundtables, in-depth interviews, and community committees with women who have experienced gambling harm.
The main objectives of the research will be to look at these experiences and women’s wider experience of gambling, gambling harms, and gambling treatment and support services. They will also be aiming to establish and explore what drives gambling harms among women and look at the services, interventions, and policies that could be implemented to reduce and prevent gambling harm amongst women.
The research was commissioned as part of GambleAware’s five-year organizational strategy.
Women’s experiences of gambling harms are under-researched, often presented as homogenous and in terms of how they differ to men’s experiences. We are pleased to have awarded this grant to this strong multi-agency, multi-disciplinary team which will be drilling down into the experiences and needs of different communities of women. This is an important step towards ensuring GambleAware and others are commissioning the range of treatment and support services women want and will use.
Clare also explained that the charity aims to develop a whole-system public health approach to gambling harms and that understanding the wider determinants that drive these, such as gender, health, race, ethnicity and inequalities, is a fundamental part of this.
