Last year the report showed there was a marked increase in the 16-25 age group signing up to use the self-exclusion tool, a rise of more than 30% in a year-on-year comparison.

There was a surge in registrations in the second half of 2024, and GAMSTOP states they think was due to global sporting events, specifically the European Football Championships and the Olympics.

Players who feel vulnerable to gambling issues can choose to register with GAMSTOP and will be blocked from all online gambling in the regulated gaming market in the UK. Individuals have the choice of the length of self-exclusion they select, which can range from 6 months, 1 year, or up to 5 years. The report showed that 48% of gamblers who registered with the self-exclusion tool opted for the maximum 5-year option to take a break from gambling.

Additionally last month GAMSTOP introduced a new option for problem gamblers, to extend the 5-year self-exclusion period. This option is called the 5-year auto-renewal option and allows players to extend their self-exclusion for an extra 5 years.

The increase in the number of under-25s registering for GAMSTOP has become an accelerating trend, with a 31% year-on-year increase in the second half of 2024, following a 12% increase in the first half of the year. There is a clear need for targeted education and support aimed at this group which is why we continue to put so much emphasis on collaborating with Ygam and Gamcare to reach out to students. We go to where they are to ensure they are aware of tools, such as self-exclusion, which can help to prevent gambling harm.

GamStop Proves a Key Responsible Gambling Tool

The self-exclusion platform has been a success in supporting vulnerable players from accessing the online gaming market. It has seen more than 500,000 players registering with GAMSTOP.

GAMSTOP continues to be a key part of a suite of RG tools that are available to gamblers who are at risk from gambling-related harm. All stakeholders in the gaming industry are working together to identify vulnerable players and direct them to tools that can reduce gambling harm, such as self-exclusion, deposit limits, and time limits.

The report from GAMSTOP also included a breakdown of the geolocation of individuals who chose to exclude themselves from gambling. This allows gaming operators and local authorities to focus their efforts in areas that may have a higher number of gamblers who are at risk of gambling addiction.
