IBIA Links Up with APAJO in Portugal
The International Betting Integrity Association (IBIA) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Portuguese Online Betting and Gambling Association (APAJO).
The partnership will see IBIA and APAJO work together on various issues relating to betting and sports integrity as well as creating a safe and sustainable online sports betting environment in Portugal.
The agreement will also make it easier for the two organizations to explore collaboration opportunities and combine their expertise across various activities such as implementing consumer, sports, and operator integrity protection measures.
Portugal is an important market for IBIA members and maintaining the integrity of the betting product and sporting events is therefore of significant importance. The agreement with APAJO marks the start of a coordinated approach to meeting our shared goals to establish and maintain a dynamic, competitive and well-regulated Portuguese betting market that deters corruption and seeks to prevent customers from being channelled into the unregulated market.
Portugal Safe Gambling Measures
Safe gambling is an important topic in Portugal’s gambling landscape. Over the years, the government has implemented comprehensive initiatives to promote safe and responsible gambling practices. These measures were firmly rooted in the country’s 2015 regulations that established the Portuguese online gambling market.
One of the key aspects of the regulations was the establishment of the Serviço de Regulação e Inspeção de Jogos (SRIJ), which served as the regulatory body responsible for overseeing and licensing online gambling operators in Portugal.
In addition, the country also mandated operators to implement a range of player protection measures, including the provision of deposit limits and self-exclusion tools.
In 2021, Portugal introduced several additional measures to limit gambling advertising and improve responsible gambling awareness in the country. These include banning gambling advertising on television and radio between 7 am and 10:30 pm and making it mandatory for operators to feature warnings about addiction in advertisements for “social games” such as Euromillions and other lotteries.
APAJO is strongly invested in building and maintaining the most beneficial environment for Portuguese consumers and operators, and sports integrity is definitively a very important part of this overarching goal.
