On April 28, 2023, Bert Neff visited an MGM casino in Ohio to place a $100,000 bet on an Alabama-LSU college baseball game based on insider information he had received from former Alabama baseball coach Brad Bohannon, stating that Alabama’s starting pitcher had been pulled from the lineup.

The MGM staff rejected the bet but permitted Neff to place a smaller wager of $15,000 on LSU to win. However, the unusual betting activity raised suspicions among the employees and led to a subsequent flagging of the bets. In the following days, betting markets for the LSU-Alabama baseball game were also suspended.

Within a week of the incident, Bohannon was sacked from his position. Although he hasn’t been charged, the NCAA banned him from college baseball for 15 years.

Neff Shared Information with Other Bettors

Neff’s sentencing hearing was held at the US District Court for the Northern District of Alabama. In a sentencing memorandum, prosecutors described Neff as a “professional gambler.” He was additionally charged with obstruction of justice after he tried to delete evidence of the Alabama baseball information from his phone.

As stated in a federal affidavit, Neff shared the information with other bettors, four of whom placed winning bets on the game.

Faced with a federal grand jury investigation, [Neff] worked to game the system. The defendant destroyed evidence, tampered with witnesses and provided false statements to the Federal Bureau of Investigation. He did not do this once. He did it on dozens of occasions and he did so for the greater part of a year.
