Iowa State QB Dekkers and Two Others in Gambling Plea Deal
Three student football players from the University of Iowa and Iowa State University have pleaded guilty to an underage gambling offense.
A law firm representing the athletes, including Cyclones quarterback Hunter Dekkers, and linemen Dodge Sauser and Jake Remsburg, reported that the players have all entered guilty pleas to the simple misdemeanor charge and are now mandated to pay a fine of $645 each.
Initially, the players faced charges of tampering with records charges in connection to a gambling scheme, which could have seen them land a potential two-year prison sentence if convicted. However, with the new agreement, the charges have been dropped, and they will also not face any additional legal punishments for their roles in the sports betting investigation.
The original records tampering charge against these young men never fit the case, either legally or factually. Hunter, Jake, and Dodge are not and never were guilty of that charge. The charge has nothing to do with gambling. Other than the fact that Hunter, Jake, and Dodge placed some bets before they turned 21, nothing about those bets was a crime under Iowa law.
Not Out of the Woods Yet
Although the legal proceedings for all three players will now be concluded, they could still be subject to NCAA punishments.
While Remsburg May receive a six-game suspension this year, Dekkers may potentially lose his collegiate eligibility permanently after allegedly placing bets on 26 Iowa State sporting events, including a 2021 Iowa State football game against Oklahoma State.
Several other Iowa players indicted in the investigation still find themselves in uncertain legal situations. Besides the three players, tight end DeShawn Hanika still has pending charges. Running back Jirehl Brock and defensive lineman Isaiah Lee exited the team during the summer and have not yet resolved their legal matters.
