ITIA Fines Philippoussis Over Betting Sponsorship Rules Breach
LISTEN TO THIS ARTICLE:Tennis professional coach and two-time Grand Slam final runner-up Mark Philippoussis has been fined $10,000 and given a suspended four-month ban by the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) for breaching tennis betting sponsorship regulations.
According to the ITIA, Philippoussis was charged and sanctioned after he received a payment for providing a voiceover for promotional content for a gambling operator.
Under Section D.1.b of the 2022 TACP rules, "No Covered Person shall directly or indirectly, facilitate, encourage and/or promote Tennis Betting ('Facilitation')."
Being an accredited coach, Philippoussis falls under the category of a "Covered Person," which entails being bound by the sport and gaming regulations concerning interactions with betting operators.
As a sport, tennis has decided that accredited individuals should not have commercial relationships with betting companies. Whilst the case is clearly not one of corruption, it is a rule that players, coaches, and others in the sport need to be aware of. Philippoussis Cooperates Fully
The ITIA also stated that the former top-10 ATP singles player did not contest the charge and cooperated fully with the investigation.
Philippoussis' suspension will not come into force unless he commits a further violation of the Tennis Anti-Corruption Programme (TACP) during the four-month period, which started on 21 July 2023.
The Australian will have to exercise caution while pursuing his coaching career, having recently made valuable contributions to the development of Stefanos Tsitsipas and Maria Sakkari.
