KSA Probes Illegal Gambling Ads in Dutch Media

The Netherlands' gaming regulator, Kansspelautoriteit (KSA), has launched an investigation into unauthorized gambling ads that have been appearing in print and online media over the past six months.

The authority is conducting the probe after receiving reports that some articles were luring readers to gamble without being registered with Cruks, the country's self-exclusion register, which poses a significant risk to vulnerable individuals.

The investigation was not limited to articles with links to illegal sites but also covered content that features promotions, logos, and images associated with Dutch financial institutions.

As part of its efforts, the KSA contacted 42 editors, informing them of the severity of the issue and asking them to take down the links in question.

In addition, organizations were issued information letters containing preventive measures to avoid similar issues in the future. The regulator also urges players to check the Gaming Guide before they sign up with an online gaming operator. The Gaming Guide is a resource developed by the authority that lists all the licensed gaming operators in the Netherlands.

KSA’s Ongoing Regulatory Efforts

The KSA has been proactive in addressing illegal gambling activities and promoting a safe gaming environment in the Netherlands. Barely a week goes without the regulator taking enforcement action against unauthorized operators or issuing warnings to protect consumers.

Earlier this month, the KSA fined Sarah Eternal €900,000 for illegally offering online gambling services to Dutch residents through its Casinosky website. The penalty exceeded the authority's standard fine of €600,000 because the operator does not hold a valid license, allows Dutch players to gamble using cryptocurrency, and lacks age verification measures.

The regulator also cracked down on an online operator using autoplay feature in one of its roulette games.

The Netherlands prohibits its online gaming operators from offering autoplay due to concerns over the feature's role in promoting gaming addiction.

The KSA ordered the casino to remove the function and take measures to prevent its future use.
