Las Vegas Convention Center Receives $600 Million Renovation and Upgrade Plan
LISTEN TO THIS ARTICLE:The Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority (LVCVA) recently held a groundbreaking ceremony to mark the start of a $600 million renovation project at the Las Vegas Convention Center. The renovation aims to give the older convention halls a more consistent look and feel with the new $1 billion West Hall, which opened two years ago.
The LVCVA's goal is to ensure that Las Vegas remains the leader in the meeting and convention industry, which supports 38,000 jobs and generates $2 billion annually in wages. The renovation will feature upgrades such as a new grand lobby between the North and Central Halls to allow in light. The new design will provide a much different feel than the way convention centers were designed and built 50 years ago.
We have built a fantastic new West Hall. Now everybody wants that experience. So the renovation, when it's done in about two and a half years, is going to make everything at the convention center a class-A experience up to the standards that is Las Vegas.
The importance of renovating the convention center goes beyond aesthetics. LVCVA board chairman Jim Gibson believes that it is necessary to make sure this important piston in the city's economic engine is well cared for.
When the economic contribution to the local economy is between $7 and $8 billion, it means that the city needs to present what it has at its best. Gibson also emphasizes that the renovation sends a message to those who come to the city that Las Vegas is ready for them and that they matter as much today as they did when the convention center was new.
Chris Hill, CEO and president of the LVCVA adds that it is important to invest in the renovation to ensure that Las Vegas maintains its position as the most popular destination for meetings, conventions, and trade shows.
Las Vegas has been the defending champion for 27 years, and in order to retain that position, the city must provide an experience that people want to come back to every year. People love Las Vegas, and they keep coming back for Las Vegas. The LVCVA wants them to keep coming back for the convention center as well.
