Maria Wennerberg Becomes New CEO of Sweden’s SPER

Spelbranschens Riksorganisation (SPER), the Swedish National Organization of the Gaming Industry, has announced that Maria Wennerberg Sedigh has been appointed as its new chief executive.

She will be replacing Jenny Nilzon later this month, with Nilzon having announced her departure from SPER after five years in the role.

Sedigh brings a vast amount of experience with her to the job. In the past, she was a Government Office Deputy Director in charge of overseeing budget coordination for the Ministries of Communications, Finance, and Home Industries.

Between 2015 and 2017, Sedigh worked as the Inquiry Secretary providing advice to the government on their reform of the gambling laws, which ultimately led to the relaunch of Sweden’s’ online gambling market in 2019.

Before the relaunch, Sedigh had been working as a senior policy advisor for the gambling authority Spelinspektionen. As such, SPER has said that Sedigh is the ideal person to lead them with her experience of all legislative areas of Swedish gambling.

Patrik Hofbauer, chairman of SPER and CEO of Svenska Spel, said, “We on the board are extremely happy that Maria will be the one to lead SPER further. She has a unique knowledge of the industry and I look forward to our collaboration.”

Sedigh will be leading SPER as the gambling industry waits for the Swedish government to finalize the second phase of its reform of the country’s online gambling market since the relaunch. According to the government, the next set of reforms will be focused on increasing player protection, operator accountability, and advertising laws.

Speaking of her appointment, Sedigh said, “I am happy to have gained the trust. I will continue to develop SPER’s work with self-regulation, consumer protection and industry confidence – as an important assignment that needs to be carried out.”
