Merkur Slots Faces Opposition to Adult Gaming Venue in Brent
Merkur Slots, the land based slots and entertainment operator, has seen its application for a new adult gaming center in the London Borough of Brent in the United Kingdom (UK) meet with opposition from some councilors saying they believe there are too many gambling sites in the location.

LISTEN TO THIS ARTICLE:The application from Merkur would see the gaming operator convert a former bank building on Brent High Street into a slots location for adults only. This would be the second site for a Merkur gaming center in the town of Brent.
Currently adult gaming locations and bingo halls are categorized differently to bookmakers, and councilors in the London Borough have called for all gambling establishments to be classed the same. There is already a guideline in planning applications that limits bookmakers to three percent and if all the gambling venues were treated equally this would effectively limit the amount of adult gaming centers in the town.
Merkur has responded to the criticism by stating that the gaming center would be for adults only with children prohibited. There will be no advertising on the shop front that may appeal to children and the interior of the venue will obscured so under eighteens will not be able to see into the premises. The business says it is committed to responsible gambling and trains its employees to give support to vulnerable individuals who may be at risk from gambling-related harm.

Some Brent Councilors Concerned About Gaming Venues
Councilors in Brent believe the addition of a new Merkur gaming outlet would add to an already overcrowded gaming market in the local town, with more than 80 gambling venues situated in the Borough. Additionally they state there is high a concentration of gambling establishments in shopping centers in the vicinity.
In November some councilors in Brent wrote to government ministers in the UK asking for more powers for local councils to legislate on the number of gaming venues in the vicinity.
