Location Yet to Be Decided

The proposed site for the casino is approximately one mile from the State Capitol. However, William Richardson, a member of the Capital City Forward Together group, clarified that the team has not pinpointed a specific location. He said that a qualified casino operator would ultimately determine the best site.

However, the group strongly recommends a location near the Capitol to maximize economic benefits for the area.

We are recommending a mile or so of the capital that brings the jobs, that brings the people. It restores the core of our city.

No State Funding Needed for the Casino

One of the proposal’s key points is that it requires no state funding, with Richardson arguing that the gambling industry is more than capable of funding the development itself.

The proposal also includes an annual $10 million “impact fee” that any developer of land-based casinos would be required to pay. This fee, Richardson explained, would directly support additional growth initiatives within Jackson, offering further benefits to the city.

Currently, the proposal is still in its early stages. Lawmakers are expected to revisit the plan next month during the upcoming legislative session.

While supporters argue the casino could revitalize Jackson, opponents are sure to raise concerns regarding traffic, increased crime, and the social impact of gambling. However, despite these potential challenges, the proposal’s supporters are optimistic that it will advance.
