MLB Umpire Pat Hoberg Sanctioned for Gambling Breaches
Major League Baseball (MLB) has taken disciplinary action against umpire Pat Hoberg for reportedly breaching the league's gambling policy.
Pat Hoberg has not officiated any game this season due to MLB' s investigation.
LISTEN TO THIS ARTICLE:In its official statement released last Friday, MLB stated that it launched an investigation into Hoberg's potential violation of the league's sports betting rules during the spring training period this year.
While the probe was ongoing, Hobert was removed from his on-field duties, resulting in him not officiating a game this season.
According to the league, its investigation did not turn up any evidence that games umpired by Hoberg were compromised or manipulated. However, it did find reasons to discipline the game official.
MLB also confirmed that Hoberg has chosen to contest its decision, so no additional details will be provided on the issue until the appeal process is completed.
Potential Dent on Remarkable Career
Hoberg started his MLB umpire career in 2014 and officially became a full-time umpire in 2017. Demonstrating his expertise, he earned selections for postseason games every year from 2018 to 2022. He is currently regarded as one of MLB's best ball-strike calling umpires, with top accuracy ratings.
According to umpire accuracy online analyst Umpire Scorecards, Hoberg achieved 100% accuracy In Game 2 of the 2022 World Series, perfectly calling all 129 balls and strikes without a single mistake.

Should the sanction against Hoberg be sustained, he will be the first MLB umpire to be disciplined for betting-related offenses since the repeal of the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act (PASPA) in 2018.
It also marks the most significant gambling-related scandal involving a high-profile official in a major US professional sports league since 2008, when former NBA referee Tim Donaghy received a 15-month prison sentence for wire fraud and sharing betting information.
MLB Cracks Down on Gambling Violations
Hoberg is a number in the growing list of betting-related controversies the MLB is currently grappling with. Several days ago, the league sanctioned five players for violating its gambling regulations. While Padres' infielder Tucupita Marcano was banned for life, Oakland A's pitcher Michael Kelly and minor leaguers Andrew Saalfrank, Jay Groome, and Jose Rodriguez were handed one-year suspensions.
This was after baseball's biggest star, Shohei Ohtani, was embroiled in a high-stakes gambling controversy when his interpreter transferred millions of dollars from his account to settle gambling debts owed to an illegal bookmaker.
