Montana Lottery Proposes Major Overhaul for Mega Millions in 2025
Last week, the Montana Lottery Commission announced proposals for an overhaul of the Mega Millions multi-state lottery game.

Tickets to Automatically Include Megaplier
Under the proposals, the price of a ticket would increase from $2 to $5, marking the first price increase since 2017. However, the new price would automatically include the Megaplier feature, which at present costs an extra $1. The new system would have Megaplier multipliers of between x1 and x10 with a 5-in-23 chance that the multiplier would be x1.
The proposal also suggests changing the seed amount for jackpots. At present, the jackpot resets to $20 million and this would increase to $50 million if the proposals are implemented. The aim is to increase the size of the average jackpot. At present, it is $387 million and it is estimated that this would almost double to $694 million. It is also thought that the chances would result in more than $1 billion in jackpots.

Reduced Numbers and Better Odds
In addition to changes to the price, there are also suggested changes to the game itself. At present, players choose from 37 gold-colored balls, but the proposals would reduce this to 34. The number of white balls would stay the same at 70. This change would improve the chances of winning the jackpot from 1 in 302.6 million to 1 in 278.4 million and the chances of winning any prize would increase from 1 in 24 to 1 in 22.15.
Montana Lottery Commission’s suggestions also include changes to the marketing of the lottery including an overhaul of its logos and pay slips to better reflect the new game.
For the changes to be introduced, they need to be approved by all nine states that form the Mega Millions consortium, including New Jersey, Massachusetts, Georgia, and California. A key figure in the process will be Gretchen Corbin, the lead director of Mega Millions and CEO of the Georgia Lottery. Should the changes be approved, then they are expected to be introduced in the spring of next year.
