Netherlands Implement New Online Gambling Deposit Limits
Starting today (October 1), new regulations designed to protect Dutch online gamblers come into effect and introduce stricter limits on deposits.

The rules aim to help operators better monitor player activity and step in if they detect harmful behavior. One of the new rules is the imposition of deposit thresholds that apply to a player’s net deposits over a calendar month. If a player’s net deposit exceeds €700 within the month, they will not be able to make further deposits until the next month. A lower limit of €300 applies to younger adults aged 18-25. These casino payment restrictions automatically reset on the first day of each month.
Option to Increase Limits with Proof of Income
Players can increase their deposit limits by providing proof of income or assets to the operator, who will then determine if an increase is allowed. The operator uses a guideline of 30% of net income to establish how much a player is permitted to deposit. In addition, operators are now required to investigate players who reach these limits to assess their financial ability to continue gambling.
Another key change is that all players must set personal deposit limits when they sign up for an online gambling account. Furthermore, operators are required to raise awareness of the help available to those at risk of gambling harm, especially for players with a deposit limit of €350 per month or €150 for young adults.
Before setting a limit, the operator must first contact the player, explain the risks associated with online gambling and provide information about available support. This includes the national self-exclusion program in the Netherlands, known as CRUKS.
Players will also receive responsible gambling messages during gameplay, which will pop up every 30 minutes to remind them how long they’ve been playing. Similar alerts will appear halfway through a user’s pre-set gaming session.

Gambling Trade Association Supports New Rules
The Dutch trade association for licensed online gambling operators, VNLOK, has given its support to the new regulations.
VNLOK members have already taken extra-legal measures to provide additional protection for players. For example, with the Online Gambling Advertising Code or stricter playing limits for young adults. VNLOK is, therefore, in favor of proven, effective measures that keep the Dutch online gambling market safe and responsible.
However, the group has raised concerns about the potential for further regulatory changes. The Remote Gambling Act, which governs the country’s online gambling regulations, is currently under review by the Dutch gaming authority, Kansspelautoriteit (KSA), with results expected at the end of October.
Some experts have warned that the new regulations will increase operating costs for gambling companies in the Netherlands. At the same time, the new regulations may reduce consumer spending, leading to financial difficulties for operators.
