New Jersey Sets Out Measure to Promote Responsible Gambling
LISTEN TO THIS ARTICLE:Administrators of the regulatory bodies for gambling in the state of New Jersey in North America have set out a plan for responsible gaming in the future.
Firstly, the Attorney General for New Jersey, Matthew J. Platkin, has announced that it is set to look for an appointment to the newly created position of Responsible Gaming Coordinator.
The person who takes up this role will be tasked with reviewing the current safeguards for gamblers within the state and identifying “gaps and problems” that require action going forward. The new coordinator will report to the Division of Gaming Enforcement (DGE) and its director David Rebuck who was one of the administrators outlining this planned strategy.
In the future, there are to be more restrictions on gambling advertisements, and the key among these is that adverts are not placed where anyone under 21 may be encouraged to wager. All advertisements will have to carry the free phone 1-800-Gambler hotline to offer help to gamblers who feel they are in need of help.
Additionally, the content of gambling advertisements should not contain phrases like risk-free bets or guaranteed wins, which give potential players a misleading impression. Gaming companies should also promote the use of opt-outs as a tool to aid responsible gambling.
As New Jersey’s gaming and sports wagering industries continue to grow and mature, so do our obligations to assist patrons who are at risk for problem gambling. By establishing a dedicated, senior-level position within the Division of Gaming Enforcement to focus on responsible gaming, we are sending a clear message that we take this work seriously – and so should the industry.
