UKGC Publishes New Problem Gambling Guidance

The United Kingdom Gambling Commission (UKGC) has published an updated list of rules relating to high-risk gamblers. Gambling operators are now required to take account of the new consumer protection guidance, which is designed to help them adhere to new rules coming into effect in September.

The Commission published its new rules in April this year. They are aimed at ensuring online gambling operators do more to identify and protect those at risk of gambling harm. The new guidance seeks to explain these rules and how operators can comply with them.

The latest guidance contains information about identifying at-risk players, the types of harm operators must monitor for and what is considered a “strong” sign of harm, how automated systems and processes may be used, and how to evaluate the effectiveness of customer interactions.

Operators must take account of this guidance ahead of the stronger requirements coming into effect. We are giving the industry time to prepare for the changes and expect full compliance by September. Every gambling business has a role to play to prevent gambling harm, and this guidance makes clear what we expect to see, which will be supported with enforcement action should we need it. In the current context, including the rise in the cost of living, it is more important than ever for operators to meet these requirements to identify customers at risk of harm.

The new guidance is part of the UKGC’s strategy to make gambling safer. The Commission is due to launch a further consultation in the near future. It will focus on three financial risks players face, binge gambling, significant unaffordable losses over time, and the risks for those who are already financially vulnerable.
