The minister has outlined that there should be changes to the country’s Racing Industry Act 2020 to ensure the sustainability of its domestic horse racing industry due to the changing online growth of gambling activities from overseas gaming companies.

TAB NZ is the state-backed gaming operator that runs the land-based monopoly for sports and racing betting. These changes will see the operator expand its remit to the online gaming market through proposed legislation.

Additionally included in the proposals is new legislation that focuses on creating a safer betting environment, and guidelines to reduce the potential of gambling related harm in the region, while increasing customer protection.
