NSW Unveils Effort to Prevent Minor Gambling During Holidays
New South Wales regulatory agency Liquor & Gaming NSW (L&GNSW) has launched a targeted compliance operation to prevent minors from entering casinos, engaging in gambling activities, and consuming alcohol during the festive period.
Regulators across various jurisdictions are also unveiling campaigns to promote responsible gambling throughout the festive season.
The regulator aims to use the initiative to ensure strict compliance with regulatory standards and responsible gaming practices during the Christmas and New Year period when casino visitation peaks.
Underage individuals found violating these regulations will face severe penalties, including fines of up to AU$4,400 ($2,803), confiscation of gambling winnings, and casino bans until age 19.
The compliance campaign will also ensure casino operators uphold their legal responsibilities by enforcing stringent ID verification, staff training, and internal security protocols.
This is a critical time of year when we see an increase in people visiting casinos, and it's essential that minors are not among them.
In recent times, the regulator has had to attend to high-profile incidents of under-18s casino violations. One case involved a 17-year-old who used fake ID to enter a casino and gambled for over an hour before detection. The minor received multiple penalties, and the casino was mandated to pay a fine of AU$25,000.

The operation is part of L&GNSW's ongoing efforts to strengthen regulatory oversight, including recent measures to improve responsible gambling practices in licensed gambling establishments.
The regulator conducted over 500 inspections earlier this year to verify compliance with newly implemented harm minimization measures, including mandatory staff training and ATM relocations from gaming spaces.
The initiative will extend through early 2025 to ensure casinos' compliance with state regulations during the busy holiday season.

Regulators across various jurisdictions are also unveiling campaigns to promote responsible gambling throughout the festive season.
Earlier this month, the National Council on Problem Gambling (NCPG) launched the 2024 Gift Responsibly Campaign to educate the public about the unintended harm caused by gifting lottery tickets to children.
Several individuals, private companies, and state lotteries, including the Maryland Lottery, have endorsed and joined the campaign.
