Ohio Casino Control Commission Issues Ban on Alabama Baseball Betting
LISTEN TO THIS ARTICLE:Ohio’s gambling regulator, the Ohio Casino Control Commission, has prohibited sportsbooks in the state from accepting wagers on Alabama baseball games.
The regulator delivered the emergency order after getting a report of suspicious gambling activity on the sport from Las-Vegas based independent integrity monitor U.S. Integrity, who sent out a similar alert to other bookmakers on the Friday night game between Alabama and LSU.
The match ended with Alabama scoring five runs in the ninth inning of an 8-6 loss on LSU, which currently sits at the no.1 position in the major college baseball polls, while Alabama was unranked.
According to the NCAA, it is aware of the situation and is “actively gathering additional information.”
The organization prohibits athletes and athletic employees from betting on games “and providing information to individuals involved in or associated with any type of sports wagering activities concerning intercollegiate, amateur or professional athletics competition.” In recent times, NCAA has initiated disciplinary action against athletes found engaging, including suspension, loss of eligibility, or even expulsion from their club or the NCAA.
Ohio has become the first state in the U.S. to ban betting on University of Alabama Baseball, and it’s unclear whether the other 32 states that legalize sports betting will issue similar orders.
As of press time, U.S. Integrity and LSU had not commented on the development.
Flagging wagers like this often occur when there are huge moves in the odds at the last minute, particularly in a game where one team is much more highly ranked than the other. In this instance, the line, I think, moved very dramatically and the game took a very odd turn where the inferior team started to make a huge run. This could all be conjecture, it could all be a coincidence. That’s the wonder of sports betting. Sometimes weird things happen.
