Ontario iGaming Market Goes Live
Finally, the iGaming waiting days are over in Ontario as the Canadian province launched its regulated and legalised online gaming market today (4 April).
The development is coming after three years of planning by the government and stakeholders. It all started in April 2019 when the province's government decided to end the lottery's online gambling monopoly. In 2020, the government began the process of legalising online gaming in its state.
Last September, the province published the final casino, sports and online betting in the jurisdiction. It also led to the establishment of iGaming Ontario as a new subsidiary of the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO). The new division was tasked with regulating the new market as well as licensing operators and suppliers.
From then to the launch date, the AGCO has approved twenty-five operators and a host of suppliers and other iGaming brands, including 888, Gaming Realms, Pariplay, Rivalry, Rush Street, Play'n GO and Inspired Entertainment.
However, as the province's iGaming market launches today, not all approved operators will be going live on the opening day. Among the operators that have started offering betting services in Ontario is PointsBet. Before the market opens at midnight today, the operator has launched a marketing campaign targeted at players in Ontario online casino.
Just moments after 12:00am local time this morning, PointsBet Canada became one of the first private sportsbooks to take a legal wager. On behalf of the entire PointsBet Canada team, I'd like to share how thrilled we are to see the province's sports wagering market officially open.
Other operators and suppliers that have gone live in Ontario since the market launched include FanDuel Group and High 5 Games.
