PointsBet Fined $25k by New Jersey’s DGE
The New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement (DGE) has hit PointsBet with a fine of $25,000 for breaking betting rules on three occasions in the last few years.
It seems that the fine was issued almost a month ago on August 23, but the New Jersey Attorney General’s Office did not release details until this week. According to reports, PointsBet has reached a settlement with the DGE and agreed to pay the fine.
Betting on Underage eSports
One infraction concerns an eSports event that took place on October 29, 2021. During this period, PointsBet allowed betting on a League of Legends match. In this case, four bets were accepted; however, one team member was 17 years old. Accepting the bet went against rules stipulating that all participants must be at least 18 years old. PointsBet acknowledged the oversight, affirming that the $1,225 in wagers were subsequently voided. To prevent such issues in the future, the company said that it has put a new procedure in place.
Accepting Bets Once an Event Had Started
Another infraction occurred in August 2021 when PointsBet accepted bets on a game that had already commenced. A bettor placed bets amounting to $13,500, potentially winning $28,275. The company identified the mistake and said it was the result of a communication problem with a third-party data provider. As a result, these bets were also nullified, according to the Division of Gaming Enforcement (DGE).
Accepting Bets on an Ineligible Game
The final violation occurred on March 25, 2022, involving bets on an unauthorized game in New Jersey. PointsBet took two bets amounting to $60 for a match featuring the Saint Peter's men's basketball team, a game not eligible for betting within the state. These bets were also voided, and the company attributed the mistake to human error.
