Rough Week for Hollywood Casino
Penn Entertainment has had a difficult week at its Lawrenceburg casino. In addition to being robbed, it also has to pay back taxes spanning several years.
Penn has been ordered to pay additional Indiana taxes accumulated over a three-year period. The ruling was handed down by the Indiana Tax Court, favoring the Indiana Department of Revenue in a lawsuit filed against Penn.
On its Indiana adjusted gross income tax returns for 2015, 2016 and 2017, Penn reported the income taxes it had paid in other states. The company then deducted these payments from its federal income tax returns and added the corresponding tax value back to its Indiana tax base.
The Indiana Department of Revenue conducted an audit of Penn's AGIT (adjusted gross income tax) returns for the relevant years. During this process, the department identified additional payments made by the casino operator to other state governments that needed to be included in the calculation of its Indiana tax base.
As a result of the audit, the department determined that Penn owed extra taxes for 2015, 2016 and 2017, along with interest and penalties. However, the exact amount was not specified in the court ruling.
