Star Sydney Resumes Serving Complimentary Alcohol to VIP Players

The probe revealed that some players were being given free alcohol in order to encourage them to keep playing. The inquiry concluded that the operator was not suitable to hold a casino license, and it was required to introduce several changes.
Free Drinks Are Back
A new report claims that The Star Sydney is once again providing high rollers with free alcohol. The operator is said to have discussed the move with the NSW Independent Casino Commission (NICC). The Commission said the serving of free alcohol was voluntarily stopped after the inquiry but that the venue has made repeated requests to the NICC to be allowed to start serving alcohol again.
The NICC has agreed to bring back the free alcohol but with strict conditions. It will only be served to VIP players, not those playing on the main casino floor.
Situation to Be Carefully Monitored
While the NICC has agreed in principle to the reintroduction of free alcohol for high rollers, it will be carefully monitoring the situation and ensuring that all regulations are followed.
Towards the end of last month, The Star published its FY23 financial results. The operator suffered a statutory net loss of AU$2.44 billion. The operator also reaffirmed its commitment to improving its anti-money laundering and safer gambling practices. The Star’s CEO, Robbie Cooke, explained that the last year was particularly challenging but that the changes the company has undertaken will ensure its continued operation and protect thousands of jobs.
