Survey Finds Widespread Support for Ban on Sports Betting Ads in Canada
A recent survey carried out by Maru Public Opinion found that there is widespread support for the introduction of restrictions to sports betting adverts amongst Canadians. The survey, carried out in February, polled 1,534 adults and found that there is demand for far tougher regulations.
A large majority of respondents, 68%, supported a ban on current sports team players and celebrities appearing in sports betting adverts while 66% said that sports betting adverts should be restricted during live sporting events. Furthermore, 59% of respondents said that there is an urgent need for a complete ban on sports betting adverts.
Concerns About Gambling Harm
It is clear that there is a great deal of concern about vulnerable demographics. Three quarters of respondents said that youth and children should not see sports betting adverts as it could lead to gambling harm and addiction.
Furthermore, close to two thirds, 62%, of respondents said that they do not believe that operators are behaving responsibly with their adverts. Just over half, 53%, supported the idea of greater government oversight and regulation within the gambling industry.
Sports Betting Spurs Greater Engagement
Unsurprisingly, the survey found that a quarter of Canadians believe that the ability to bet on sports leads to more active engagement with sports events. This was particularly true amongst the younger respondents, with a third of those aged 18 to 34 agreeing.
The results of the survey back the idea that in general, Canadians wish to see stricter regulations regarding sports betting advertising in order to protect the vulnerable.
In related news, the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH) has called upon the Ontario government to place restrictions on gambling ads in order to protect public health. They want to see restrictions that will prevent minors from seeing gambling content and CAMH’s Dr. Nigel Turner has urged operators to take greater responsibility amid worries that more youths are turning to gambling.
