Tesla to Start Selling EVs at Connecticut Casino
Tesla continues to face obstacles in its battle against direct sales bans in certain states, even after almost 10 years since it established its initial company-owned store. However, in Connecticut, the innovative automaker has ingeniously circumvented one of these prohibitions by establishing a hub within a casino.
Mohegan Sun Adds Tesla
The Mohegan Sun Casino made an announcement on Wednesday, revealing that Elon Musk and Tesla will launch a unique sales and delivery center within the casino premises. This novel establishment not only enables customers to purchase or collect their desired Tesla electric cars in the fall, but also grants them access to a wide range of other passenger vehicles.
In Milford, Connecticut, there exists a Tesla showroom that grants access to rentals. However, in a twist, the casino will provide an opportunity for drivers to explore further while staying within the confines of state regulations.
Collaborating with a casino to market its vehicles is not an unprecedented occurrence for Musk's company. In June, the Oneida Indian Nation in New York made an announcement of collaborating with the company to create a showroom on its protected land alongside the New State Thruway. This joint venture enabled Tesla to circumvent the restrictions imposed by New York's prohibition on direct sales back in 2014.
Last year, in the tribal land of Nambé Pueblo in the north of Santa Fe, New Mexico, Tesla opened a store. This carefully executed move was a conscious effort to circumvent the state's strict naming regulations. Moreover, this unique store not only caters to the desires of Lucid and Rivian, visionary automakers seeking to establish their independent sales networks, but also opens up new avenues for collaboration between them.
Tesla Takes on Connecticut
Connecticut is among the many states that have enacted franchise laws prohibiting car dealerships from engaging in direct sales to consumers. However, there is an exception at Mohegan Sun, situated in the scenic village of Uncasville, nestled in the southeastern part of the state.
This unique establishment is located on Mohegan tribal land, granting the tribes the ability to implement distinct regulations aimed at boosting economic growth. Tesla has taken advantage of this opportunity on at least one occasion in its ongoing battle against franchise laws.
The company has tirelessly presented multiple bills to the state legislature, emphasizing the need for franchise expansion. Unfortunately, their efforts were in vain last year when a bill failed to reach the voting stage. Similarly, this year, despite their persistence, another bill proposed by Tesla got rejected by the Transportation Committee.
