Thai Police Arrest over 2000 in Betting Crackdown on Euro 2024

Police in Thailand have been carrying out a sustained crackdown on illegal gambling in the country during Euro 2024 and have seen more than 2,600 individuals arrested since the start of the football competition.

From the start of the Euro 2024 tournament to the completion of the group stages the police in the region say they made 2,626 arrests for wagering on football across all betting platforms. Senior police officials say the operation will continue as Euro 2024 progresses to the knockout stages of the competition.

As well as arresting gamblers having a wager on the football the police in the jurisdiction have apprehended dozens of individuals who are suspected of organising some of the illegal betting operations.

Police Arrest Organizers and Block Multiple Illegal Sites

Among the 2,000 people arrested at land-based gambling venues 39 individuals are believed to be the organizers of the illegal gaming operations, with Police stating the amount of money wagered was 339,000 baht. This is compared to over 500 arrests relating to 142 illegal betting websites, with the reported amount of 1.8 billion baht being wagered.

The DES states it has set up a dedicated team of inspectors for the Euro 2024 tournament. This has paid dividends with the monitoring team having identified and blocked 600 sites during Euro 2024. When the DES finds an illegal betting site it informs the Technology Crime Suppression Division who have the power to take legal action against the operators of illegal gambling websites. The DES boasts it has blocked over 42,000 illegal gambling websites between last October and May this year.

The authorities in the country have predicted there will be a rise in football gambling in Thailand for the Euro 2024 competition.

Following these crackdowns, police stations nationwide have been instructed to intensify their efforts to suppress football gambling, including online betting rings.
