The Football Association of Ireland (FAI) convened a disciplinary committee which gave Rainey a six-month ban for breaching its betting rules on football between 2021 and 2024. In the hearing, it was found that Rainey had placed many wagers on League of Ireland and FAI Cup matches.

Rainey and the FAI pointed out that he had not placed bets on any game he was involved in. He pleaded guilty to the offenses and said he took full responsibility for his actions and the resulting ban. The FAI stated they hoped that players in the Irish Leagues would familiarize themselves with the strict betting restrictions that apply to professional football players.

Player Seeks Help for Addiction

Rainey, who admitted to the charges of a breach in betting rules on football events said he had addiction issues and would be seeking help and treatment for this. He thanked Finn Harps and the PFA Ireland for the support they had given him during this disciplinary procedure.

Additionally, he said he was looking forward to returning to playing after the ban and believed the experience would make him a stronger person. However, Rainey was critical of the level of gambling advertising in football.

Football administrators are keen to reduce gambling by footballers on football matches so that the public can trust the integrity of the games they watch. Last year Ivan Toney was banned for 8 months for more than 200 betting breaches.

While I fully acknowledge that I broke the FAl's rules on betting on any matches, I stress that I did not bet on a match in which I was involved. I fully respect the integrity of the game and would not involve myself in any action that would threaten that. However, I also realise that the betting rules are in place for a reason and that I breached them. That is on me and I accept full responsibility. I also accept the ban I have received and will not be appealing it. My intention is to seek treatment for my addiction and to return to football after my suspension as a better person and player.
