UKGC’s Safer Gambling Advisory Board Appoints Two Experts
The UK Gambling Commission (UKGC) has announced the appointment of two new members to its Advisory Board for Safer Gambling (ABSG), Dr. Vivre Marionneau and Dr. Spencer Murch.

Both experts bring extensive experience that will further the board’s work promoting responsible gambling in Great Britain.
Appointments to Boost ABSG’s Efforts
It is hoped that the newly appointed members will strengthen ABSG’s initiatives to promote safe gambling practices as the industry continues to grow. With their regulatory expertise, Dr. Marionneau and Dr. Murch will play an important role in protecting vulnerable individuals from gambling harm.
Both Marionneau and Murch are thought of as “respected academics” and they each have notable achievements in gambling research.
Dr. Vivre Marionneau is a respected sociologist and the director of the Centre for Research on Addiction, Control, and Governance at the University of Helsinki in Finland. Her expertise includes gambling regulations, policy analysis, digital gambling platforms, industry practices, and the qualitative study of gambling impacts and harms.
Dr. Spencer Murch is a cognitive psychologist and an AGRI Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Calgary, Canada. His research focuses on the cognitive, behavioral, and psychophysiological aspects of addictive digital behaviors. Murch is skilled in identifying at-risk individuals and exploring innovative ways to use AI technology for timely interventions to prevent problem gambling.

Marionneau said that she is honored to be appointed to the ABSG at a time when effective regulation is more important than ever. She added, “I am thrilled to be a part of this impressive team of experts, and I look forward to advising particularly on regulatory practices and research from other jurisdictions.”
Murch also expressed his excitement over joining the board, and he stressed the need to understand gambling-related risks both in the UK and globally.
The mandate of this group [ABSG] is important, timely, and represents an opportunity to transform research insights into working harm prevention policies.
Anna van der Gaag, chair of the ABSG, welcomed the two new appointees and said that she is confident they will contribute meaningfully to the UKGC board’s work. She added, “I am delighted to be welcoming them and have no doubt they will bring valuable new insights to an ever-expanding range of topics which inform policy and practice in gambling regulation.”
