Vast Majority of Nevadans Support Legalization of Lottery

Nevada is well known as the gambling capital of the world. Millions of hopeful people flock to Las Vegas each year to try their luck in the glamorous brick-and-mortar casinos, betting on slots, table games, and sports. However, somewhat bizarrely, it is one of the few US states that does not have a lottery.

The lottery was banned in Nevada as soon as it was created in 1864. In addition to Nevada, there are just four US states without a lottery: Alabama, Alaska, Hawaii, and Utah. However, Nevada’s lawmakers have been trying to change this and it appears that progress might finally be made.

Poll Reveals Support for Lottery

Towards the end of March, Noble Predictive Insights published details of a poll that revealed support for a lottery. The poll took place between February 27 and March 5, 2024, and it questioned 829 registered voters in the state.

The vast majority of respondents, 75%, expressed support for a lottery while just 13% were opposed to the idea. The remaining 12% said that they were not sure or did not have an opinion.

The poll also found that 82% of Democrats who took part in the poll support the creation of a lottery with just 7% opposed and 10% unsure. There was a similar level of support amongst Republican respondents with 74% for the lottery, 15% against and 11% unsure.

Amongst independent and other voters, support for the lottery was lower at 71% with 16% opposed and 13% unsure.

Lottery Unlikely before 2026

At present, those who want to play the lottery in Nevada have to drive to border towns such as Primm to purchase tickets, and it isn’t unusual to see long lines at small stores, especially when the jackpots are particularly large.

However, while a bill proposing lottery legalization in Nevada did pass out of the legislative session last year, there is still a long journey ahead. The bill must now pass out of the Legislature again in 2025 and receive approval from both the Senate and Assembly. Nevadans would then be able to vote on it in 2026.
